A Idéia de Peregrinatio na Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis

Resumo

Resumo Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis é como ficou conhecido um famoso ramo de textos latinos medievais que relata a viagem marítima do santo irlandês, Brandão, e seus monges em busca da terra repromissionis, um longínquo paraíso insular. A narrativa deve ter sido bastante conhecida na Idade Média ocidental, pois ainda hoje mais de uma centena de manuscritos, dos quais o mais antigo data do século X, são conhecidos. Ao que tudo indica, as navegações do intrépido santo muito alimentaram o imaginário do homem daquele tempo; no entanto, são poucos os trabalhos acadêmicos que buscaram entender as razões dessa fama ou, pelo menos, compreender o sentido histórico do texto que as conta, inserindo-o e examinado-o à luz do contexto da época que o produziu e o recebeu. Identificando a necessidade de preencher tal lacuna, decidimos investigar o texto a partir da idéia de peregrinatio, fundamental na tecitura de seu significado. Palavras-chave: Monasticismo, Outro Mundo, Peregrinação Abstract Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis is a famous branch of Latin medieval texts that relates the voyage of an Irish saint, Brendan, and his monks in search of the terra repromissionis, a distant islandparadise. Apparently this narrative was widely known during the Western Middle Ages. There are more than a hundred extant manuscripts, from which the oldest dates back the tenth century. It seems that the journeys of the intrepid saint nourished the imaginary of medieval man; however, there are few scientific works devoted to understand the reason of such fame or at least comprehend the historic meaning of the text, inserting it and examining it in the light of the context in which it was produced and by which it was received. Identifying the necessity to fill in this gap, we decided to investigate the text examining the idea of peregrinatio, extremely important in the construction of its meaning.
