‘Primus Scottorum’: a subalternização dos Pictos e a fundação da Escócia na Crônica dos Reis de Alba

Resumo: O objetivo do artigo é investigar a subalternização dos Pictos na fundação da Escócia. Analisamos o discurso e a fortuna manuscrita da Crônica dos Reis de Alba, escrita em 971 no reinado de Cináed II mac Mail Coluím (r. 971 – 995). Questionamos: por que o discurso de subalternização dos Pictos foi central no estabelecimento da Escócia? Para respondermos essa pergunta, trazemos à discussão documentos relacionados como a Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, a Lista dos Reis Pictos e os Anais de Tigernach. Nossa hipótese é de que a subalternização dos Pictos a partir do reinado de Cináed mac Ailpín (r. 840 – 858) foi um elemento fundamental para 1) consolidar a Escócia como uma territorialidade comum compartilhada entre povos Pictos e Irlandeses e 2) para ascender uma nova identidade, os Gaélicos Escotos.

Abstract: The objective of the article is to investigate the Pictish subalternation in the foundations of Scotland. The investigation analyses the discourse and manuscript fortune of the Chronicle of the Kings of Alba, written in 971 during the kingship of Cináed II mac Mail Coluím (971 – 995). We ask: why the discourse of Pictish subalternation was central to the establishment of Scotland? To answer this question, we discuss related documents such as the Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, the Pictish king-list and the Annals of Tigernach. Our central hypothesis is that Pictish subalternation from the kingship of Cináed mac Ailpín (840 – 858) was a fundamental element in 1) consolidating Scotland as a common territoriality shared between the Picts and in 2) ascending a new identity, the Scots Gaelic.
