Resumo: Este artigo tem como foco Hildegard von Bingen (1098 - 1179) e sua autoridade singular. Mulher respeitada e influente no século XII, ela atuou na esfera pública em um período marcado pela rigidez hierárquica e pela predominância masculina em cargos de poder - façanha que provoca perplexidade, dúvidas e discussões ainda hoje, prova da importância e da atualidade do tema. O artigo demonstra que a construção da autoridade de Hildegard von Bingen ocorreu por uma convergência de fatores histórico-sociais, teológicos e discursivos. Inicia-se com uma exposição da vida de Hildegard, destacando eventos e falas marcantes que ilustram sua autoridade; em seguida, investiga-se as raízes e os desdobramentos da sua autoridade, especialmente a utilidade de seu discurso para a Igreja Católica. Por último, destaca-se que o próprio Cristianismo apresenta em seu âmago a abertura que propiciou o surgimento de autoridades femininas na Idade Média e explica-se como Hildegard usou a fraqueza como fundamento de sua autoridade.

Abstract: This academic article focuses on Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) and her singular authority. A respected and influential woman in the twelfth century, she acted publicly in a period marked by strict hierarchical structures and the predominance of men in positions of power—a feat that still provokes perplexity, questions, and debate today, demonstrating both the importance and the contemporary relevance of the topic. The article argues that Hildegard von Bingen’s authority emerged from a convergence of historical-social, theological, and discursive factors. It begins with an account of Hildegard’s life, highlighting significant events and key statements that illustrate her authority; it then examines the roots and developments of that authority, especially the usefulness of her discourse for the Catholic Church. Finally, it emphasizes that Christianity itself contains, at its core, an openness that enabled the rise of female authorities in the Middle Ages, and it explains how Hildegard used weakness as the foundation of her authority.
