Visões do apocalipse anglo-saxão na “Destruição Britânica em Elegia” (c. 540-546), de São Gildas

Resumo Este artigo analisa a obra Destruição Britânica em Elegia do monge bretão Gildas, escrita por volta dos anos 540 d.C. Destacamos as passagens nas quais o autor exorta os chefes bretões por suas fraquezas e sua incapacidade de governar devido aos seus vícios. Para Gildas estes chefes seriam tiranos e os principais responsáveis pela derrota bretã face às invasões. Além disso, destacamos a crítica mordaz e eloqüente de Gildas aos sacerdotes de seu tempo, uma crítica provavelmente influenciada pelo rígido monaquismo irlandês. Para complementar a pesquisa histórica baseamo-nos também em uma obra de Tácito (Vida de Júlio Agrícola), Beda (História Eclesiástica das Gentes dos Anglos), Nennius (História dos Bretões) e a Crônica Anglo-saxã, escrita no tempo do rei Alfredo, o Grande. O artigo foi dividido em seis partes: características comuns dos reinos germânicos, a invasão da Bretanha - com uma breve descrição das migrações germânicas e a instalação de anglos, saxões e Jutos, as novas estruturas sociais - especialmente a mudança da Sippe, a cristianização da Inglaterra - com o retorno do paganismo e o trabalho de conversão de Agostinho, e uma breve descrição biográfica de Gildas. Palavras-Chave: Gildas, Migrações germânicas, Monaquismo Irlandês Abstract This article analyses the work British Destruction of the British monk Gildas, written in the 540 years AD. We brought out the passages that the author advises the British chiefs to supplant their weaknesses and their governmental incapacities due to their vices. To Gildas this chiefs were tyrants and the main responsible for the British defeat from the invasions. We also brought out the critics that Gildas made of the clerics of his time, probably influenced by the Irish monkship. To complete the historical research we took one work of Tacito (Life of Julio Agricola), Beda (Historical Works), Nennius (History of Britons) and The Anglo Saxon Chronicle, written in the time of the king Alfred, the Great. The article is divided in six parts: the common characteristics of the German kingdoms, the invasion of the Britain – with a brief description of the Germanic migrations and the settlement of the Angles, Saxons and Juts, the new social structures – specially the changing of the Sippe, the Christianisation of England – with the return of the paganism and the works of conversion of Augustine, and a brief biography of Gildas.
