ISIDORO DE SEVILHA E O REI SISEBUTO: A CONVERSÃO DOS JUDEUS NO REINO VISIGÓTICO

Resumo: Isidoro, bispo de Sevilha, no início do século VII, quando exerceu intensa atividade espiritual, cultural e política voltada para a expansão do cristianismo. Sua relação com os monarcas visigodos foi intensa e sua influência sobre os acontecimentos é amplamente percebida. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a relação entre o bispo de Hispalis e o rei Sisebuto e discutir a responsabilidade de Isidoro de Sevilha na conversão forçada dos judeus, realizada pelo mesmo monarca. Isidoro escreve de maneira contraditória: apoiando o proselitismo forçado no momento da sua execução, mas questionando a sua validade em um período subsequente, e responsabilizando por esta política o zeloso Rei, já então falecido. Abstract: Isidore, bishop of Seville at the beginning of the seventh century when exerted intense spiritual, cultural and political activity directed towards the expansion of Christianity. His relationship with Visigoths monarchs was intense and his influence on events is widely perceived. The objective of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the bishop from Hispalis and the king Sisebuto and to argue the responsibility of Isidore of Seville in the forced conversion of Jews held by the same monarch. Isidore write in contradictory ways by supporting forced proselytism at the time of its execution, but questions its validity in a subsequent period, and directs the liability of this policy to the overzealous King, then deceased.
