OF ACRID PERFUMES AND DARK PLEASURES: TEÓFILO DIAS’ FATAL FLOWERS

Abstract

This article’s main objective is to analyze the first part of the work Fanfarras, published in 1882 by Teófilo Dias, which receives the title of Flores funestas, where the presence of Baudelairian traits is more evident, especially: the idea of femme fatale and its corrosive substances that infect the senses of the poem’s subject; the restoration of the carnal aspect of women, in contrast to the anemic romantic representation; and a certain perversity. In this way, the article is divided into three main sections, in which we discuss: perfumes, femme fatale and synesthesia; delusions, fantasy and the erotic body; and, finally, the bestiality of desire, in A matilha, and the ideal of the light stone, in A estátua, two erotic tendencies.
