NEOLIBERALISM AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract: In this article, I investigate how neoliberal economic values, which permeate different areas of society, also guide English language teaching practices in private schools, and how they act to form subjects who perpetuate the elitist and unequal dynamics of our society, due to the lack of involvement in public debates and social struggles. To bring concrete elements of my teaching practice, I take autoethnography as research method (ANDERSON, 2006), which values my narratives of experience as a privileged resource for the construction of meanings. In contrast to this language teaching practice, I indicate principles of a Critical Linguistic Education oriented towards transforming actions of power relations in society and committed to the defense of human rights.
