The main objective of this article is to identify colonizing aspects present in the historical figure of Madame Godin presented in the short story “Madame Godin” found in the work Gaivotas by Hélio Rocha. The article is divided into two parts. In the first part of the article we will present who Madame Godin was, considering elements that appear in the story in question and, mainly, in Jean Godin's letters to La Condamine, then we will present evidence of colonization expressed in the character's experiences and experiences. In order to do so, we will use the critical approach of post-colonial studies, identifying colonizing aspects relating to authors who argue about history in dialogue with literature. The theoretical support will be based on Hayden White, Albert Memmi, Neide Gondim, María Lugones, Frantz Fanon, among others. It is expected as a result of this article a reflection on the vision of Europeans in relation to the new world and, specifically, on the Amazon and the oppression in relation to those considered on the margins, among these subjects, women.
Keywords: Madame Godin; Postcolonial Studies; Colonization.
