CADERNO LITERÁRIO N° 2 FROM CAMPANHA PRÓ-IMPRENSA BY CENTRO CULTURAL GONÇALVES DIAS: A CRITICAL VIEW TOWARDS THE BEGINNINGS OF MODERNISM IN MARANHÃO

Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the literary publication Caderno Literário nº2, organized and edited by Centro Cultural "Gonçalves Dias" in 1947, a Maranhense guild. The main goal is to show how this journal provided a space for several young Maranhão intellectuals to expose their texts and their influences, and how their poems already showed a transition between the persistent academicism and Modernism, which had not yet taken place in Maranhão. In this study, we briefly analyze two prose texts and 16 poems, but we focus on two, Horizonte vesperal, by Nascimento Morais Filho, and Meu verso, by Lago Burnett, so that we can perceive the duality of tendencies still in vogue in our authors and how the renovation movement, although desired, did not fully conform to modernist aesthetics. To support our theoretical foundation, we used the concepts of Candido & Castello (2001), Corrêa (1989), Meireles (1955) and Ávila (1975), among others.
