Abstract: Úrsula, the novel to be addressed in this essay, was initially published in 1859 and considered the first novel written by a woman in Brazilian literature. It addresses topics such as the situation of black women and men subjected to the slave regime and the position of the women under the patriarchal domination strongly rooted during the 19th century, contributing “to the exposure of a fragmented society full of prejudices”, as it “creates a broad panel of the formation of Brazilian society” (PEREIRA, 2018, p. 10). Throughout the development of this essay, it is verified how the melodramatic mode confirms the narrator's point of view.
Keywords: Úrsula. Patriarchy. Abolitionism. Feminine pioneering. Melodramatic mode.
