Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the short story "Alma" (Soul), published in the book Doramar ou A Odisseia (2021), by Itamar Vieira Junior. In the narrative, there are accounts from the memory of the protagonist about the situation of subalternity to which she was submitted, as a slave and a black woman. Through the episodes presented by the narrator, the text brings verbal images that enhance the voice of the enslaved, telling the reader the facts from the perspective of the oppressed. To support our analytical propositions, we will use the considerations of Gayatri Spivak (2010) and Lilian Prazeres (2015), about the concept of subalternity, of Michell Pollak (1989; 1992) about memory; and of Liliane Louvel (2012) and Márcia Arbex (2006), about the verbal imagery relations.
Keywords: Soul. Memory. Subalternity. Text and Image.
