THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE GRAMMATICAL ASPECT IN THE NEWS TEXTUAL GENRE

Abstract

The present study seeks to analyze a grammatical category generally not addressed by traditional grammars and, consequently, not addressed by Portuguese classes (or addressed indirectly): the Aspect category, which is related to the verb. As much as the notion used by the verb can be understood in different ways through the verbal categories – which are six in number: aspect, tense, mode, voice, person and number –, Portuguese teaching privileges only five verbal categories and neglects the Aspect, a category that defines the duration of the verbal process. In this sense, we intend to investigate the morphology of the verb, especially the verbal aspect of Portuguese in newspaper texts. The objective is to characterize and differentiate the occurrences of the grammatical aspect, taking as theoretical support the studies of Comrie (1976); Castilho (1968; 2014), Travaglia (2016) and others. The texts that constituted the research corpus belong to the journalistic genre news and were collected in the newspaper “O Estado do Maranhão”, with publication from September to October 2018 and lecturing on the same topic in the political area and thus maintaining thematic equality, in this case, the 2018 elections for the government of the Maranhão state. In order to study the aspectual marking of these journalistic texts, we chose to observe them according to the precepts of the generative theory.

Tereza Cristina Mena Barreto de Azevedo, Universidade Estadual do Maranhão-UEMA

Doutorado em Linguística pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Possui graduação em Licenciatura Plena em Letras pela Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (1993), graduação em Licenciatura Plena Em História pela Universidade Federal do Maranhão (1984) e mestrado em Letras (Ciência da Literatura) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2001). É professora da Universidade CEUMA, desenvolveu serviços na Fundação Municipal de Cultura de São Luís, professora Adjunto II da Universidade Estadual do Maranhão e técnica em atividades culturais no Museu Histórico e Artístico do Maranhão. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Língua Portuguesa, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: linguagem, comunicação, museu, gramática gerativa.
