The process that involves learning a foreign language is much more complex than we think and involves several factors that can facilitate or hinder the learners' journey. Bearing this in mind, the present work aims to take a look at two of the factors that are directly involved in the intricate linguistic development in foreign languages: cultural affiliation and motivation. To do so, we will use experience reports from language learners who are active in a community of volunteer translators called Viki. The main purpose is to investigate how cultural affiliation and volunteering can help or contribute to their motivation in the process of learning foreign languages. The results show that the participants feel motivated by intrinsic and extrinsic factors to learn a language.
