AUTHENTIC MATERIALS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING: CONCEPTS AND DEVELOPMENTS

Abstract: This study aims to select and analyze some concepts about authentic materials and authenticity in scientific articles related to teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). All articles were obtained through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the Periódicos Capes and Scielo platforms, detailing how they were chosen. The keywords used during the research were: “materiais autênticos”; “materiais autênticos e ensino de inglês”; “authentic materials”; “authentic materials or self-learning in English” and “authentic materials and English”. After applying filters, seven articles were selected to be used as the basis of this study. The concepts and definitions differ in two main approaches: authenticity as a characteristic of the materials and authenticity as a learning process. After the discussions on the subject, a possible concept is proposed to corroborate the reflections on authentic materials and authenticity in English teaching, since the importance of these is understood when considering an intercultural teaching of a foreign language.
