ABSTRACT: From a crossed perspective between the contemporary creation/release of Canção do exílio and the historical-cultural (colonial) circumstances that, at the time, the province of Maranhão and, equally, the city of Caxias - muse of inspiration for transposition of the lyrical self -, the proposal is focused on exploring the constitution of the poetic images that make up the universe of the song (poem), by the Maranhão writer Gonçalves Dias. Covering different aspects of phenomenological thinking that testifies to the materiality of images, we problematize, from the imagination of water, the relationship between the aspect of the real (place/history) and the imaginary (poetic signs). The objective is to think - considering the reality/imagination parameter - how, genuinely, the poet transcends the phenomenon of reality and makes Canção do exílio a spatial reference of originality. The theoretical dialogue is constituted, above all, based on the philosophical thought of the Frenchman Gaston Bachelard.
Keywords: Song of exile; Historical events; Lyrical images; Poetics of water.
