Abstract: this article is focused on an investigation of the phenomenon commonly known in Semantics as blending. In it, the enunciating subject, in the process of constructing the utterance, semantically packages, in a single representation, what would be more than one morphosyntactic representation. We start from the hypothesis that this phenomenon is not a morphosyntactic category in natural languages, but a language category. Based on the Theory of Predicative Enunciative Operations (TOPE) by Culioli (1990), (1999a), (1999b), we will show the analysis of /mão/ in Brazilian Portuguese in order to show that blending results from the organization and functioning of notional domains and not from linguistic representations themselves. Methodologically, we picked up a base statement from the Brazilian Corpus virtual platform and manipulated it by forming paraphrastic families to access, through the dynamics set by the articulations of language and language and lexicon and grammar, the operations that support this phenomenon. In conclusion, we say that for an operative approach like TOPE there is a deeper level of analysis of number that overcomes the arbitrary and diachronically marked opposition between singular and plural that is reverberated by the blending phenomenon.
