This article proposes an analysis of the novel Água de Barrela, by Eliana Alves Cruz, in light of discussions surrounding the new historical novel. Cruz’s work reconfigures the official historical discourse by placing at the center of the narrative the experiences of Black women whose trajectories have historically been erased or subalternized. Through the reconstruction of both family and collective memories, the author weaves a narrative that intertwines orality, ancestry, and resistance, challenging the boundaries between history and fiction. The article highlights how Black women act as mediators of their own paths not only as characters but also as bearers of knowledge, emotions and survival strategies. The theoretical framework for this study draws on the works of Judith Butler (2000), Angela Davis (2016), and Roger Chartier (1991).
