Abstract

This article analyzes the novel Perro Viejo (2005), by Cuban writer Teresa Cárdenas, through the lens of historical fiction theory and decolonial studies. From a critical perspective on Afro-Latin American literature written by women, the paper highlights how Cárdenas’s narrative reclaims silenced memories of slavery through fiction. The research is structured around three main axes: a theoretical review of historical fiction with an emphasis on its educational potential; the role of Black women’s writing as a tool for denunciation and identity affirmation; and an analysis of Perro Viejo, emphasizing its decolonial discourse and the historical and cultural themes that emerge from the protagonist’s experience. Thus, historical fiction is understood as a powerful tool for resistance, memory, and the reconstruction of Afro-descendant identities in Latin America.
