Abstract

Abstract

Brycon orbignyanus is a neotropical fish commonly known as piracanjuba, found in several South American countries. This species has great ecological importance and is included on the official list of endangered fish. The objective of this work was to analyze compensatory growth in individuals of this species maintained under ex situ conditions. Two experiments were conducted in ponds with constant water renewal, and analyses of chemical, physical, and biological variables of the aquatic environments were performed. Piracanjubas showed compensatory growth when kept at low density and fed to satiation during periods of average water temperatures between 25°C and 33°C in an environment with water renewal, total transparency, and the presence of submerged macrophytes. Small animals, originating from environments with restricted food and high population density, showed faster growth when fed ad libitum and kept at low stocking density in an environment with water renewal, total transparency, and average water temperatures above 24°C. The individuals stopped eating and moved slowly in environments with water temperatures below 21°C.
