This study, constituted through an exploratory and descriptive research, investigated and presented data referring to the basic sanitation scenario - in the water supply and sewage collection and treatment segments - in Brazil, with emphasis on the Northeast Region. Based on the data collected, an analysis was carried out in order to highlight the challenges for expanding access to these services by the year 2033, according to the long-term goal established by PLANSAB, in dialogue with Law No. 11,445 / 2007. The results found indicate the existence of regional inequality, and pointed out some challenges to be overcome (high investment value, urban and rural inequality and low purchasing power of the population). Therefore, it is understood that a joint eff ort by the State Entities will be necessary in order to guarantee, by 2033, in the Northeast Region, universal access to drinking water, sewage collection and treatment services.
