VALUES AND POTENTIALITIES OF THE LADEIRA DOS PEREIROS GEOMORPHOSITE, CALDEIRÃO GRANDE DO PIAUÍ, PIAUÍ, BRAZIL

Abstract

This paper aims to present the scientifi c value and educational potential of the Ladeira dos Pereiros geomorphosite, located in the municipality of Caldeirão Grande do Piauí, northeastern region of Brazil. This geomorphosite is inserted in the Chapada do Araripe Environmental Protection Area. It is an area of geological contact between the Araripe sedimentary basin (where lands of the Exu, Araripina and Santana formations
emerge) and the Borborema Province (where soils of the Jaguaretama complex outcrop),
which shows signs of tectonic disturbances in the soils of the Araripina formation, and
rich fossiliferous fauna in the soils of the Santana formation. A preliminary assessment of
the geomorphosite, made from the quantifi cation criteria proposed by CPRM (Geological
Survey of Brazil) (2016), revealed at the site a scientifi c value of international relevance
and an educational potential of national relevance, characteristics that justify the need to
adopt geoconservation measures for this area.
