SWOT analysis for territorial planning in the municipality of Prata do Piauí (PI), Brazil

Abstract

In order to expand knowledge about the municipality of Prata do Piauí, from a geographic perspective, this work aims to use the SWOT analysis, as an evaluation tool of this municipality, in order to infer its peculiarities, from the identification of its potentialities translated into “strengths and opportunities”, while its difficulties were considered “weaknesses and threats”. As methodological procedures, the deductive method was used; basic, exploratory and qualitative research and also SWOT analysis, supported by field observations and geoprocessing techniques. It was found that, despite the negative representation that people express about the semi-arid region and its weaknesses in the socioeconomic and environmental spheres, this area has geographical characteristics of great potential for the development of tourist activity, mainly. In view of the various revisions in the boundaries of the Brazilian semi-arid region, Prata do Piauí continues to belong to sub-region semi-arid transition.
