Abstract: The article analyzes aspects of the adaptation of the book “The Two Deaths of Quincas Wateryell”, by Jorge Amado, to the cinematographic work “Quincas Wateryell” (2010), by Sérgio Machado. The analysis is based on the theoretical elements proposed by Robert Stam (2008) and Linda Hutcheon (2013). From this study, the complex and difficult relationship between cinematographic language and literary fiction is highlighted. The filmic work goes beyond literary barriers in the use of its language, which is characteristic of adaptation, and opens up new meanings and forms of engagement. From the theory of adaptation, it can be concluded that both languages, in the case of the works in question, sometimes approach and sometimes distance themselves, without, however, being possible to establish any qualitative hierarchy between them.
