In recent years it has been noticed, in official documents in education, the need to develop in young people some specific abilities, of which autonomy, critical sense and creativity stand out. However, the insertion and valorization of such competences in contemporary curriculum did not result from an organized pressure from the working classes, on the contrary, those who ensured their implementation were capitalists, mainly linked to industry and the fi nancial market, through various foundations and institutions. That said, our text seeks, through a historical resumption of the assumptions of rationalism and the analysis of the skills most required by capital, to demonstrate that the bourgeoisie cannot unrestrictedly defend an autonomous, critical and creative public education in its most humanist sense.
