LANDSCAPE OF THE ALENTEJAN PIRITE: FROM THE CONCEPT TO THE STRATEGIES

Abstract

Industrial heritage has been for many years disregarded as a possibility of strategic value, given its recent history as well as its association with workers hardships or even its environmental implications. It’s also relevant to highlight that this strategic resource has a vaste span of intervention, that can go from the architectural object to the territory, as demonstrated by the Heritage Parks in the USA since 1970 and other cases in Europe. Documents such as the Nizhny Tagil (2003) charter, equally contributed to emphasized its heritage value as well as providing methodologies to its preservation, while considering the various scales of intervention. The proposal of the Cultural Landscape of Alentejo’s Pyrite, composed by the minning sites of Lousal, Aljustrel and S.Domingos/Pomarão is based on the State of the Art given by the experiences mentioned above along with the cultural landscape understanding and its consideration within the Portuguese context.  From the analysis of graphic elements unknown since the research that allow to draw the methology for cultural andscape proposals, this reasearch project has the ultimate goal of being on the field. The strategies are based on its dissemination, communication and branching to spin-off partnerships with other research centres, municipalities and branding.
