Abstract

ABSTRACT

Comparative literature explores the dialogue between literary works and other areas of knowledge, with intertextuality being a key concept in this field. The study of intertextuality, pioneered by theorists such as Bakhtin and Kristeva, investigates how texts refer to each other, generating new meanings. This paper seeks to situate intertextuality in the founding studies of comparative literature, presenting its definitions, types and importance. Since Antiquity, human thought has used comparison as a method of knowledge. In the 19th century, comparative literature consolidated itself as a discipline, influenced by historicism and the scientific method. Authors such as Pichois, Rousseau and Van Tieghem contributed to this evolution, emphasizing the relationship between literary works and historical contexts. In Brazil, Tasso da Silveira and João Ribeiro developed their own approaches, highlighting cultural influences and interactions. Intertextuality, according to Kristeva, shows that every text is a mosaic of quotations, interacting with previous discourses. Genette classifies transtextual relationships as quotation, allusion and parody. Thus, intertextuality allows us to understand how literature is constructed from other works, and is essential for comparative studies.
