Resumo

The Thunnus atlanticus is a species caught along the entire Brazilian coast. This study aimed to characterize the composition of catches in fisheries targeting T. atlanticus and related species in Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. Twenty-eight landings were monitored in the municipality of Piúma, Espírito Santo, between November 2017 and August 2019. Fifteen fish species were caught, totaling 117,472 kg of fish, with an average of 4,195 kg ± 1,659 kg per trip. Thunnus atlanticus was the most abundant species, representing 68.82% of the total catch (80,612 kg), categorized into three classes based on local commercial knowledge: individuals weighing less than 2 kg (PP), between 2 and 5 kg (VP), and over 5 kg (VG). The group of bonitos, composed of Auxis thazard and Euthynnus alletteratus, represented 15.44% of the total catch (18,134 kg). Next, Coryphaena hippurus stood out with 6,223 kg (5.03%), and Katsuwonus pelamis with 5,223 kg (4.48%). Among the total catches of T. atlanticus, 54.32% (43,788 kg) were composed of VP, 26.16% (21,089 kg) of VG, and 19.52% (15,735 kg) of PP. Only T. atlanticus VP showed a statistically significant difference compared to the other classifications. The catch compositions of the schools varied throughout the landings, both in the proportions between the groups of T. atlanticus and in the species of bycatch.
